LUMEN DE LUMINE
An interactive resonant light installation for the opera Königskinder at the Theater und Orchester GmbH Neubrandenburg / Neustrelitz
For the opera production Königskinder, the artistic production team has conceived and realized an extraordinary interactive lighting system in addition to conventional stage lighting. This interactive-resonant light installation allows central motifs like sun rays, geese, or the witch’s hut to emerge as sensually experienceable phenomena, thus depicting not just real places or things but rather the inner states of the main characters.
The innovative approach is made possible through technology developed by the Neustrelitz Laboratory for Performing Arts and Digitality. Designed and implemented by André Bernhardt and Dr. Marcus Doering, this digital system enables eight movable spotlights to interact in real time with the music, the performers, and the stage space. Based on real-time mapping and tracking technology, the system can capture not only the position, shape, and/or movement of the performers in the space using infrared light but also acoustic signals such as music or sounds. It analyzes this input with a latency of under 100 milliseconds and translates it into artistically usable digital parameters.
This results in a “performer made of light,” which does not respond illustratively but rather makes internal states, energetic fields, and narrative turning points experienceable in a novel way.
This project was funded by the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, represented by the Ministry of Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs.
